About Orthodontic Expanders in Nolensville
Finding out your needs a palatal expander naturally leads to a lot of questions. The first one being, “What exactly is a palatal expander?”
A palatal expander is an orthodontic appliance that gradually widens the upper jaw. Dr. McClaran may recommend one to create more space, improve the fit between the upper and lower teeth, and correct issues such as crowding or a crossbite. In some cases, expansion can also play a role in airway-focused treatment.
Palatal Expanders Explained
In essence, a palatal expander helps guide the growth and development of the upper jaw and improve airway health. This type of treatment is often most effective in younger patients because the upper jaw is still developing, which makes expansion more predictable and efficient.
At McClaran Orthodontics, we customize every expander for the individual patient. The appliance fits on the upper teeth and includes a small screw in the center. By making small adjustments over time, the expander gently widens the upper jaw and creates the space needed for healthier tooth and bite development.
Dr. McClaran will work with you to decide whether an expander is the right option during your child’s evaluation and will walk you through every step of the process.
How Do Palatal Expanders Work?
Dr. McClaran will demonstrate for you how to turn the expander as instructed for a specific number of turns. Each adjustment applies gentle pressure that gradually widens the upper jaw.
Once we've seen the desired expansion, the expander stays in place for several months to help stabilize the result and prevent your child's jaw from shifting back.
MARPEs
While we most commonly use traditional expanders in children, older teens, and adults may need a different approach. In some cases, Dr. McClaran may recommend MARPE, a type of expansion that works more effectively once the upper jaw has matured.
With these adult expanders, Dr. McClaran will install small, temporary screws in the roof of the mouth. This lets us anchor the appliance directly to the bone, and that way expand the adult palate.
Adjusting A Palatal Expander
Adjusting an expander may feel unusual at first, but our team will make sure you feel comfortable with the process. We’ll show you exactly how to make each adjustment and answer any questions along the way.
- Step 1: Find a well-lit space and gently tilt your child’s head back.
- Step 2: Insert the key into the small hole in the center of the expander.
- Step 3: Push the key toward the back of the mouth until the expander rotates and the next hole appears.
- Step 4: Gently remove the key, making sure the next hole is visible for the following adjustment.
